Emergent global oscillations in heterogeneous excitable media: The example of pancreatic b cells

چکیده
Using the standard van der Pol–FitzHugh–Nagumo excitable medium model, I demonstrate a generic mechanism, diversity, that provokes the emergence of global oscillations from individually quiescent elements in heterogeneous excitable media. This mechanism may be operating in the mammalian pancreas, where excitable b cells, quiescent when isolated, are found to oscillate when coupled, despite the absence of a pacemaker region.

متن کاملFast subsystem bifurcations in strongly coupled heterogeneous collections of excitable cells.
A continuum model for a heterogeneous collection of excitable cells electrically coupled through gap junctions is introduced and analysed using spatial averaging, asymptotic and numerical techniques. Heterogeneity is modelled by imposing a spatial dependence on parameters which define the single cell model and a diffusion term is used to model the gap junction coupling. For different parameter ...

We study wave propagation in networks of coupled cells which can behave as excitable or self-oscillatory media. For excitable media, an asymptotic construction of wave trains is presented. This construction predicts their shape and speed, as well as the critical coupling and the critical separation of time scales for propagation failure. It describes stable wave train generation by repeated fir...
متن کاملComplex chemical reactions * A review
Complex responses have been observed in a wide range of chemical and engineering systems: In well-stirred and unstirred solution-phase, in gels, in heterogeneous catalysis and dissolution reactions, in gasand solid-phase combustion, widely in biological systems, accompanying phase transitions, in atmospheric kinetics and even in interstellar dust clouds. Complex behaviour does not, however, imp...
متن کاملFrom Neurons to Brain: Adaptive Self-Wiring of Neurons
During embryonic morpho-genesis, a collection of individual neurons turns into a functioning network with unique capabilities. Only recently has this most staggering example of emergent process in the natural world, began to be studied. Here we propose a navigational strategy for neurites growth cones, based on sophisticated chemical signaling. We further propose that the embryonic environment ...
